Orders Can End a Washington Lease
The Residential Landlord-Tenant Act has two separate provisions for service members, their spouses and dependants, and they work differently.
For a fixed-term lease, written notice of 20 days or more ends the tenancy when you have permanent change of station or deployment orders, and a copy of the orders or a signed letter from the commanding officer goes with the notice. For a month-to-month tenancy, less than 20 days' notice is allowed where the orders do not leave time for more.
What the VA Funds, and What It Does Not
The federal service dog benefit is narrower than most veterans expect, and it is worth knowing before paying a program thousands of dollars.
Covered by the benefit
Veterinary insurance and approved equipment for a dog placed with a veteran whose need arises from a visual, hearing or substantial mobility impairment.
Not the dog itself
The regulation funds care and hardware rather than the purchase or the training fee, and mental health conditions are not named in it.
Ask your team
Talk to your VA primary care or mental health provider about what applies to your case. A dog is one option among several, not the first one for everybody.
Trained dogs on VA property
Trained service dogs are allowed at VA facilities. A support animal with no task training is treated differently, so check with the facility before an appointment.
Choosing a Program in a State With No Accreditation Body
The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs says plainly that no accrediting body monitors organizations that train service animals in this state, and it points veterans to Assistance Dogs International to check a program's standing.
Check accreditation first
Ask which body accredits the program, then verify it independently rather than trusting a logo on a website.
Companion programs exist too
The state department lists veteran-focused adoption and companion programs, including one based in Spokane, alongside service dog organizations.
Know which animal you need
A trained task dog and a companion animal solve different problems. An evaluation can help sort out which conversation to have.

On-Post Housing Versus the Civilian Market
Which rulebook applies depends on who owns the roof over your head.
Privatized base housing
Follows installation rules and the housing partner's policies. Ask for the written accommodation procedure, the decision timeline and whether pet rules differ for assistance animals.
Off-base rentals
Ordinary Washington housing law applies, including the rule that a pet deposit on top of the standard deposit is an unfair practice.
Short-notice moves
Start the documentation before the packers arrive. A letter that is already in hand travels better than one being written while you are in temporary lodging.
Spouses and dependants
The lease termination provisions reach the service member's spouse and dependants, not only the person named on the orders.

Support Animal or Psychiatric Service Dog?
Both paths exist for post-traumatic stress, and they lead to different rights and different amounts of work.
A support animal
No training requirement, protected in housing under state law, and no access to shops, transit or the flightline. Documented by a letter from a licensed provider.
A psychiatric service dog
Individually trained to perform tasks tied to the disability, such as interrupting a dissociative episode or creating space in a crowd. That training is what unlocks public access.
