What an ESA letter costs you — and what a PSD evaluation costs you
These are two different clinical products at two different prices. Knowing which one your situation calls for is the single biggest factor in what you end up paying.

Emotional support animal housing letter
An ESA letter fee pays a licensed clinician to review whether an assistance animal relates to a disability-related need in your home, then prepare, deliver and stand behind the signed letter. It is not a registration fee, and it does not buy an approval decision in advance.
Your ESA letter payment covers

It never covers
- An ESA registration number or any registry listing

PSD evaluation cost
Psychiatric service dog evaluation
A PSD evaluation fee pays for clinical review of a psychiatric disability and of the specific work your dog is trained to perform. It does not pay for training the dog, and no payment can create the public-access rights the ADA ties to genuine task training.
Your PSD evaluation payment covers
- A clinician licensed in your state who evaluates you, not the dog
- Assessment of functional limitation rather than diagnosis alone
- Documentation of the specific trained tasks you describe
- Language kept clearly separate from emotional support animal wording
- Support with verification and clinician follow-up questions
It never covers
- Training your dog, or any assessment of its behavior in public
- Certification or an official service dog ID — none exist federally
- Automatic airline approval; carriers require their own DOT forms
- Any claim of ADA status the dog's actual training does not support
Choosing wrong is the expensive mistake. An ESA letter does not convert into a PSD evaluation, and a PSD evaluation does not replace a housing letter — they answer different legal questions, so moving between them means paying for a second review.
