Making the Request in a Large Complex
Kent's bigger buildings run on a portal and a leasing team that changes often. That is an argument for writing, not talking.
- Email the request rather than raising it at the desk, so the date is fixed.
- Say plainly that the animal is an assistance animal and that you are asking for the pet policy to be waived.
- Attach the provider letter and offer the county license and vaccination records.
- Ask for the decision in writing by a date, and follow up in writing if it slips.
- If a portal insists on a pet profile and a fee, say in writing that the animal is not a pet and ask for the fee to be removed.

Buses, Trains and the County Tag
Kent sits on the RapidRide A Line and the Sounder south corridor, with county licensing behind both.
King County Metro
Service animals ride free on a lap or the floor. Small dogs on a lap ride free, any other dog pays a fare, and animals that are not dogs travel in a carrier.
Sounder and ST Express
Sound Transit allows service animals, with other animals only in carrying containers. Its board voted in 2025 to open services to leashed dogs, so check the current rules.
Regional Animal Services
Kent uses the county service for licensing, animal control and sheltering. Dogs and cats need a license from eight weeks old, and buildings may ask for proof.
A City Where Requests Arrive in Many Languages
Kent is one of the most diverse cities in the state, and that shapes how these requests go wrong. A refusal is often a misunderstanding rather than a policy.
Ask for it in writing
A written decision is easier to translate, to share with an advocate and to attach to a complaint than a hallway conversation.
Interpretation is reasonable to request
Ask the office how it handles language access. Agencies taking complaints, including the state commission, work with interpreters.
Nothing about immigration status
Fair housing protection does not turn on citizenship, and an accommodation request does not require you to discuss it.

The Green River Trail, Mill Creek Canyon and lake parks such as Clark Lake carry most of the daily routine.
- Leash on trails and in parks, and pick up after the animal every time.
- Geese and waterfowl along the river are a reliable distraction; practice recall before the first busy weekend.
- Valley fog and winter rain make reflective gear more useful here than in the hills.
- A working service dog goes where its handler goes; a support animal follows the same outdoor rules as any pet.

Kent Questions About Money and Animals
Is there a limit on deposits in Kent?
Kent has no city cap, so the state Residential Landlord-Tenant Act governs. A deposit can only be collected where the rental agreement is written and you were given a checklist describing the unit's condition, and it must be returned within 30 days with an itemized statement and receipts.
Which charges can never apply to my assistance animal?
A pet deposit charged on top of the standard deposit is an unfair practice under WAC 162-38-100, and state guidance says there should be no pet fee. A pet rent line for an approved assistance animal is the same kind of charge. The ordinary deposit every tenant pays still applies.
Who licenses pets in Kent?
Regional Animal Services of King County. Dogs and cats aged eight weeks or older need a county license, and a building may require proof that your animal complies with local law.
Can I take my support animal on the bus or the Sounder train?
On King County Metro a support animal travels as a pet: small dogs on a lap ride free, other dogs pay a fare, and anything that is not a dog rides in a carrier. On Sound Transit's Sounder service only service animals and small animals in carriers are allowed.
What happens if my deposit is not returned?
A landlord who misses the 30-day deadline or fails to provide the documentation is liable for the full deposit, and a court may award up to two times the deposit where the refusal was intentional, plus attorney fees.
Where does a Kent tenant take a refused accommodation?
To the Washington State Human Rights Commission within one year, on 800-233-3247. HUD also accepts complaints within one year, and a private Fair Housing Act lawsuit generally allows two years.
