Emotional Support Animals in Aiken's Horse Country

Aiken is a city of about 32,000 known for its clay horse trails, steeplechase and polo. It also draws engineers and contractors from the Savannah River Site. If you rent here with an emotional support animal, you may share a road, a trail or even a farm with horses.

Renting Where Horses Come First

In Aiken's horse district, the roads are clay, riders have the right of way, and many landlords keep horses of their own. That shapes how a dog fits in.

  • Tell the landlord how your dog behaves around large animals, and offer to keep it leashed near paddocks and barns.
  • Ask where your dog can relieve itself away from riding rings and feed areas.
  • Agree on conditions in writing. Reasonable conditions are part of making an accommodation work.

Walking a Dog in Hitchcock Woods

This large private forest in the middle of the city is open to walkers, runners and riders. Its foundation posts these expectations for dog owners.

Leash

Aiken's rule requires dogs off their owner's property to be under physical control on a leash.

Horses

Riders share the trails. Step aside, and keep your dog calm and close.

Hunt season

In fall and winter, dogs stay out of the Woods during scheduled hunts. Check the calendar first.

Liability

Owners can be held liable for injury or damage their dogs cause.

Short Leases for Site Contractors

Many people come to Aiken for work at the Savannah River Site and rent short-term. The same fair housing rules apply, but timing matters more.

Barn Apartments and Owner-Occupied Farms

Some Aiken rentals are apartments over a barn or a cottage on the owner's farm. That can change which rules apply.

A possible exemption South Carolina's Fair Housing Law exempts certain owner-occupied properties with four or fewer units, and federal law has a similar rule. If the owner lives on the farm, the rental may be exempt. Ask before you sign, and talk it through even if it is.

Aiken Renters' Questions

Can I walk my dog in Hitchcock Woods?

Yes, on a leash. The Hitchcock Woods Foundation points dog walkers to Aiken's rule that dogs off their owner's property must be under physical control on a leash. During the fall and winter hunt season, dogs are kept out of the Woods at scheduled hunt times.

Can I get an ESA letter in Aiken without a local provider?

Yes. A clinician licensed in South Carolina can evaluate you by telehealth from anywhere in the state. Documentation is written only when the evaluation supports it.

Does Best Friend Express allow emotional support animals?

Aiken County's Best Friend Express permits service animals. An emotional support animal is not a service animal under the ADA, so ask the transit office before you ride with one.

Where can Aiken residents get mental health care?

Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center provides public outpatient care for children, adolescents, adults and families in Aiken and Barnwell counties. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Is a garage apartment on an Aiken horse farm covered by fair housing law?

It depends. South Carolina's law exempts certain owner-occupied properties with four or fewer units, and federal law has a similar exemption, so a small rental where the owner lives on site may be exempt. Ask before you sign.

Can an Aiken landlord refuse my ESA because they keep horses?

Keeping horses is not a reason on its own. A covered landlord has to look at your animal's actual behavior, and the two of you can agree on reasonable conditions, such as keeping the dog leashed near paddocks.
