On the Space Coast, the question is rarely whether the landlord will agree
Brevard runs on aerospace and defence contracting, and a large share of the people who write to us from here hold a clearance or are waiting on one. Their first question is never about housing. It is whether being assessed at all will show up somewhere that matters.

The clearance question, answered properly
A housing accommodation request is a private matter between you and your landlord. It is not reported to your employer, your facility security officer, or any clearance authority. Nobody is notified that you asked.
That is the direct answer to the direct question, and for most people on this page it is the end of the matter. An emotional support animal request concerns a tenancy. It generates a letter to a landlord confirming a disability-related need — a letter that names no condition — and nothing else.
The broader worry underneath it is usually about mental health care generally rather than about housing. That concern is worth addressing too, because it is widespread in this workforce and it keeps people from getting help they need.
The federal government's own position, stated repeatedly and publicly, is that seeking mental health treatment is not by itself a reason to deny or revoke a clearance. The adjudicative concern has always been impaired judgment or reliability, not the fact of having sought care. Agencies have spent years actively encouraging people to seek help precisely because the opposite belief was doing damage.
The security questionnaire is narrower than people assume
Its mental health section has been revised over the years and focuses on court-ordered treatment and on conditions bearing on judgment and reliability, rather than on any consultation you have ever had.
It carries explicit carve-outs
Counselling for grief, family or marital matters, for adjustment after service in a combat environment, and for being a victim of an assault have long been treated differently from the general question.
Concealment is the recognised risk
Across adjudication generally, candour is treated far more favourably than omission. People get into difficulty for what they hid, not for what they disclosed.
Where this page stops
Clearance adjudication is specific to your agency, your level and your circumstances, and forms change. Nothing here is a substitute for asking your facility security officer or a security clearance attorney, both of whom can speak to your actual situation. What we can tell you with confidence is the narrow point at the top: a housing accommodation request does not reach them.
Who works on this coast
Space operations
Launch cadence has grown sharply, and with it a workforce running unsociable and unpredictable hours tied to windows rather than shifts.
Avionics and systems
Long-established contractors around Melbourne, with cleared engineering staff and correspondingly formal employment.
Subcontractors
Smaller firms on fixed-term contracts, whose staff move between employers and between rentals more often.
Everyone else
The rest of the county's economy, competing for the same housing without the contractor salaries.
The launch schedule matters more than it sounds. Work that follows windows rather than a roster disrupts sleep in a way that is clinically relevant, and it is worth describing at assessment rather than treating as ordinary overtime.
Housing in Brevard
Purpose-built apartments
Growing quickly around Melbourne and Viera. Professional management, portals, third-party animal screening, and predictable timelines.
Beachside condominium
Indialantic, Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach. Older stock with association review and small volunteer boards.
Palm Bay single-family
A vast grid of modest houses, many let by individual owners. Fast, informal decisions and no process to navigate.
Contractor short lets
Furnished units taken for the length of a contract. Ask about accommodation before signing, because a six-month term leaves little room afterwards.
Viera and Suntree HOAs
Master-planned communities whose covenants yield once an accommodation has been granted, exactly as any other rule does.
Whatever kind of building you are in, the documentation is identical — and finding out whether you would get it costs nothing.
Free screeningWhat a landlord here may and may not see
Worth setting out precisely, for a workforce trained to think about information disclosure.
They see: the conclusion only
That an animal is needed for reasons connected to a disability. Nothing behind it.
They see: credentials they can check
The licence details, precisely so the state register can confirm them. That is why they appear at all.
They do not see: your diagnosis
No condition is named and no code appears anywhere on the document.
They do not see: your records
Nothing from the assessment itself is disclosed, and a provider is not entitled to request it.
Your employer sees: nothing
There is no route by which a housing accommodation reaches an employer, a programme office or a security officer.
If you are relocating in for a contract
Brevard takes on a lot of people from elsewhere, often at short notice and often with the animal arriving after they do. That sequence is worth planning.
Ask what the building requires
In writing, before signing. Five minutes then avoids commissioning the wrong document later.
Raise it with the lease
An accommodation handled alongside the paperwork reads as part of the tenancy rather than a change to it.
Get the request in
Where household goods are still in transit you have a rare chance to ask before the animal is in the property. It is worth using.
Expect it to be examined
Documentation signed in another state draws questions here that a Florida letter does not. For a posting of any length, a local assessment settles it.

The letter goes where you send it, and nowhere else.
Space Coast questions
Will my employer be told I had an evaluation?
No. There is no mechanism by which a private clinical assessment for a housing accommodation reaches an employer. The document produced goes to your landlord, names no condition, and no copy is sent anywhere else.
I am waiting on a clearance. Should I delay the evaluation?
That is a question for your facility security officer rather than for us, and it is worth asking them directly rather than guessing. What we can say is that the housing request itself is not disclosed to anyone, and that the government's stated position has consistently been that seeking care is not itself disqualifying.
My contract is eighteen months. Is it worth doing?
Usually yes, since the accommodation covers the tenancy rather than the contract, and eighteen months is long enough that arguing about it twice is worse than settling it once. Raise it when you sign the lease rather than partway through.
My furnished short let has a strict no-animals clause.
A clause of that kind is policy, and policy is precisely what an accommodation departs from once the animal is approved. A short furnished let remains a dwelling. The practical difficulty is time: on a six-month term, a request made on arrival may not be decided before it matters.
Can a landlord ask what I do for work?
For the tenancy, yes — earnings and employer are ordinary letting questions. For the accommodation, no. Your occupation is irrelevant to whether the request must be weighed, and the two conversations should stay apart.
Is there a Brevard County ESA registry?
There is no register, in Brevard or at any other level of government. County animal licensing covers every animal for rabies and ownership purposes and grants no status. More on registries →
