Work with a Michigan-licensed mental-health provider for a real evaluation — legitimate documentation from Metro Detroit to the Upper Peninsula.

Every Michigan ESA letter follows a genuine clinical evaluation — we never sell registrations or badges.
Detroit and several other Michigan cities have a large stock of land contracts, rent-to-own arrangements and informal tenancies that never quite became either a lease or a mortgage. People living in them are often unsure whether they are tenants, buyers, or something in between.
It matters here because fair-housing obligations attach to housing providers in defined situations. Before you write your request, work out what you actually signed - and if you cannot tell from the document, that is itself worth asking the Michigan Department of Civil Rights about.
| Arrangement | How the request usually works |
|---|---|
| Standard written lease | The ordinary route. Write to the landlord or management company, attach the clinician's letter, ask for a written answer. |
| Managed apartment complex | Follow their published accommodation process, then email the same documents to a named person so a record exists outside the portal. |
| Land contract | You may be a purchaser rather than a tenant, which changes which rules apply. Worth clarifying before you frame the request. |
| Renting a room in the owner's house | Narrow exemptions can apply to very small owner-occupied properties. Whether yours qualifies is fact-specific and worth checking rather than assuming. |
The Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act prohibits disability discrimination in Michigan housing, and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights investigates. The federal Fair Housing Act runs alongside through HUD, and you can use either.
Michigan also treats misrepresenting an animal's status as a matter it takes seriously, which is worth knowing before anyone suggests describing an untrained pet as a service dog. Accuracy is not merely more honest here; it is safer.
Both towns lease a year ahead and turn over almost entirely in August. A request filed in the autumn for the following September gets a considered answer. The same request filed days before move-in competes with everything else the office is doing.
University residence halls are generally treated as covered housing and run their own accommodation processes with their own deadlines, which close earlier than most people expect.
Begin with the free screening. If it indicates an evaluation is worthwhile, a Michigan-licensed clinician conducts one by video and issues documentation where the assessment supports it.
Possibly, but not in the same way as a tenancy, because a land contract may make you a purchaser rather than a renter. Clarify what you signed first; the Michigan Department of Civil Rights can point you in the right direction.
Breed rules belong to the pet policy, and an approved assistance animal is not being housed as a pet. A refusal needs a reason specific to your animal rather than a category.
Usually not. Michigan housing providers check for a Michigan licence, and proximity to the border does not substitute for one.
No. Public access under the ADA is for dogs trained to perform tasks. An ESA letter concerns your housing.
No law sets an expiry. Michigan managers generally want something written in the last twelve months, and student-market landlords are the strictest about it.

Because Michigan takes misrepresentation seriously, both the licence and the fact that a real evaluation took place are established before any documentation is issued.
